This is Deep House

Hi. Welcome to the inaugural post of the "I Love Deep House" blog. "Deep House" is a term that is used rather loosely these days. There are many "house" sounds out there now: "soulful", "techno", "ambient"...and they're all used interchangeably, much in the same way that "Disco" was back in the '70's. But true afficianados know that there were several "disco" styles as well. You had the more commercial sound of songs like "More, More, More" by the Andrea True Connection (that I like) and you had the uptempo R&B of groups like Double Exposure and their cut "My Love Is Free". Two very distinctive sounds, and yet still grouped under the same general umbrella. For the purposes of this blog, we will try to define the term "deep" and stay true to that style though it may cross several genres and several decades. For starters, deep is a sound that you would only here in the clubs. Anything being played on the radio or otherwise considered "commercial" would never be considered "deep". The term itself is derived from the phrase "diggin' deep in the crates" which was used by dj's and fans alike whenever a dj pulled out a hard to find funk or disco track. The very reason for going to clubs was to hear the music that you couldn't hear anywhere else. There is a certain sound to the classics. A certain rhythm; a certain "soulfulness" to the vocals, or, sometimes, just a creativity that sets the song apart from anything that's currently being played. Loosely translated, deep is good. Hott. Original. Ingenious. I'll get this party started with one of the classics of the disco era as well as a classic from the height of the house movement, circa 1990. "Dance", by Earth People
